Multiple early morning crashes shut down part of Interstate 35 south of Des Moines
THEY WILL BE SENTENCED IN NOVEMBER. TONIGHT, TWO DEPUTIES ARE LUCKY TO BE ALIVE AFTER A SEMI SLAMMED INTO THEIR SQUAD VEHICLES. THESE ARE THE PICTURES ON YOUR SCREEN. IT HAPPENED THIS MORNING IN WARREN COUNTY. WHILE THEY WERE RESPONDING TO ANOTHER CRASH AT ONE POINT, ONE SEMI IN THAT CRASH WAS ON FIRE. KCCI KAYLA JAMES TELLS US HOW THIS CHAOTIC MESS UNFOLDED. KAYLA? WELL, STACY, THIS SITUATION IS REALLY AN EXAMPLE OF A DOMINO EFFECT. YOU CAN SEE THE AFTERMATH RIGHT HERE. LUCKILY, THE DEPUTIES WHO RESPONDED TO THE CRASH SAW THE SECOND SEMI COMING JUST IN TIME. ONE OR BOTH OF THE VEHICLES IS FULLY ENGULFED IN FIRE RIGHT NOW. THAT’S THE START OF A LONG MORNING FOR FIRST RESPONDERS. EARLY THURSDAY, LEAVING SCORCHED DEBRIS BEING CLEANED UP. HOURS LATER, A SEMI TRUCK REAR ENDING ANOTHER ONE AROUND 230 IN THE MORNING ON I-35, NEAR SAINT CHARLES. I SPOKE WITH A THIRD PARTY ON SCENE, SAID ONE OCCUPANT POSSIBLY HAS A BROKEN LEG BUT CAN’T GET CLOSE TO THE ACCIDENT. IT’S TOO HOT. CREWS MAKING QUICK WORK OF THE FLAMES. LOOKS LIKE THE FIRE IS JUST ABOUT AN HOUR. ONE DRIVER TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. BOTH SEMIS AND THE TRAILER REMOVED AS CREWS WORKED FOR HOURS SWEEPING THE DEBRIS. GOT A COUPLE WARREN COUNTY DEPUTIES ON SCENE AS WELL. THEY’RE JUST DOING TRAFFIC CONTROL RIGHT NOW UNTIL THE DEBRIS GETS CLEARED. BUT THREE HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL CRASH AROUND 545, WE’VE HAD TWO CARS THAT HAVE BEEN HIT. ANOTHER INCIDENT HAPPENS. THE IOWA STATE PATROL SAYS A SEMI TRUCK FAILED TO TAKE AN EXIT RAMP, CONTINUE NORTH AND HIT BOTH VEHICLES. JUST YOU GUYS ARE AWARE WE HAVE A SECOND AREA SEMI TOOK OFF TWO DEPUTIES ON THE MAIN ROAD. THE BACK END OF ONE SQUAD VEHICLE SMASHED IN, THE OTHER APPEARING TO BE SWIPED ON THE BACK END OF THE PASSENGER SIDE. WARREN COUNTY’S SHERIFF SAYS BOTH DEPUTIES ARE OKAY GETTING OUT OF THE WAY. MOMENTS BEFORE THE COLLISION, THE SEMI TRUCK DRIVER ALSO WASN’T HURT. I-35 NORTHBOUND IN THE AREA OPENED BACK UP AROUND 830. AND THE IOWA STATE PATROL SAYS THE SEMI TRUCK DRIVER WHO HIT THE SQUAD CARS WAS ISSUED THREE CITATIONS, INCLUDING FAILURE TO MOVE OVER FOR

An investigation is underway after part of Interstate 35 was shut down for several hours early Thursday morning due to multiple crashes.According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, a semi-truck traveling northbound on I-35 near St. Charles ran into the back of another semi-truck at around 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning.The first semi-truck caught fire after the collision, which blocked the interstate, according to the crash report. The driver of the first semi-truck was injured and taken to a Des Moines hospital.As officers responded to the crash, two Warren County deputy vehicles were hit by a semi-truck. The sheriff's office said the deputies, who were assisting with traffic control, are OK after getting out of the way moments before the crash. The Iowa State Patrol says the semi-truck driver who hit the squad cars was issued three citations, including failure to move over for an emergency vehicle.
